Bitter because of the awful sin committed by terrorists on that day. Yet sweet because of the memories of all those many who died in service, in rescue and protection, and of those who died in innocence. As people of Faith we try to remember that day with love and hope and not with anger. We sang Prayer for Peace, top. After all many peoples across the world are suffering from wars of terrorism.

I decided to put the image of the Tear Drop memorial above the Prayer for Peace. It is a song of thanksgiving given by Zechariah on the birth of his son John the Baptist. The song anticipates the coming of the Messiah as evident in the last verses of the canticle.:

76  And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High;
for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him,
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins,
78 because of the tender mercy of our God,
by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven
79 to shine on those living in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the path of peace.

The song is a fitting entrance to Palm Sunday and Holy Week. The canticle as adapted by Hal Hopson and performed by our choir takes the song to an even more celebratory level with dance like rhythms and rounds. It revels in the Joy of Palm Sunday before the darkness ending in Good FridayGood Friday.
The choir sang Fall on Your Knees in a new arrangement by Pepper Choplin. Pastor also played a guitar solo, but I arrived too late from the choir room to capture it before the service.

Pastor Hoffman spoke of the story of an unwed, pregnant Mary who was at first rejected by her Joseph and of the proclamation of the good news, the beginning of our gospels, to unwashed, poorly regarded young men alone in the hills - shepherds. Christmas is a story of hope and happiness for ordinary people.

The service ended in a candle lit, congregational rendition of Silent Night and in a postlude, All is Well, sung by the women of the choir.

Shelley Breen (nee Phillips) sang Not that Far from Bethlehem written by members of her contemporary group, Point of Grace. Chuck and Ruth Anderson sang The Star a contemporary interpretation by Kathy Mattea of the life journey of Mary and Joseph: “Just another homeless family, hoping for a stranger’s charity”. The choir sang Fall on Your Knees in a new arrangement by Pepper Choplin. Pastor also played a guitar solo, but I arrived too late from the choir room to capture it before the service.Pastor Hoffman spoke of the story of an unwed, pregnant Mary who was at first rejected by her Joseph and of the proclamation of the good news, the beginning of our gospels, to unwashed, poorly regarded young men alone in the hills - shepherds. Christmas is a story of hope and happiness for ordinary people. The service ended in a candle lit, congregational rendition of Silent Night and in a postlude, All is Well, sung by the women of the choir. </itunes:summary>

Good Friday this year was marked by a moving performance of His Living Last Words by Elaine Shram. The performance is a recounting of the last words of Jesus by those who surrounded him at the cross.

Unfortunately, the laptop recording the performance had a glitch in digitizing the audio and the recording was lost. But, we have some photos.

Pastor Hoffman calls us to look at it as a story of two very different sons living with a compassionate father. The one is wasteful, seeking an easy and luxurious life. The other brother is hard working and angry and impatient with the laziness, immorality and ingratitude of his brother. Pastor Hoffman calls us to see that the parable is really about God’s mercy, forgiveness and willingness to draw to him brothers of all persuasions, the hard working and the wayward. We are all welcome to the feast at the house of the Lord.
Two Brothers Photo by Chirs8800
Flickr.com
